1984 Edmonton Oilers reunite for 30th anniversary of Stanley Cup win
Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson are in town for the reunion
It was just like old times at Rexall Place on Wednesday afternoon.
Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey and other players from the 1984 Stanley Cup-winning Edmonton Oilers squad gathered at their old rink ahead of an upcoming reunion.
The Oilers will host a celebration in honour of the 30th anniversary of the 1984 Stanley Cup victory on Friday.
Many of the retired hockey stars jumped at the chance to be reunited one more time.
“That’s the thing about this group,” Gretzky said. “It’s one phone call for this group to be together… with this group of guys, everyone has always jumped in. We’re more excited to be here than maybe the city is to have us here.”
“I never finished high school so this is my first actual reunion,” joked Messier.
As the group exchanged inside jokes on the stage and laughed about their memories, it was clear that they were looking forward to this week’s events.
Although three decades have passed since the team won the Stanley Cup, Coffey said things are still the same among the group.
“It’s amazing how some things don’t change over the years. When Wayne asks for something, we usually do it,” Coffey said. “We were trained that way from an early age. Anytime you have your leader that is your hardest worker and asks you to do something, you do it.”
Messier said that the team sitting on that stage on Wednesday was one of the best in history.
“I would argue to say that because of the guy sitting to my left here [Gretzky], I would stack us up against any team on any day of any era and I would take our chances,” Messier said.
