Suspected driver arrested in crash that killed Keith Morley of Turner Valley
February crash killed Keith Morley, 52, of Turner Valley
A third person has been arrested in connection to a fatal hit and run in the southwest Calgary neighbourhood of Woodbine earlier this year.
Early on the morning of Feb. 18, a truck heading south in the northbound lanes of 37th Street S.W. collided with another vehicle.
The crash killed Keith Morley, 52, of Turner Valley, who was driving to work on his first day of being a certified Red Seal carpenter, his family said in his obituary.
On Aug. 10, police arrested Derek Brian Grouette, 33, in Blackfalds. He was the subject of Canada-wide warrants.
He faces numerous charges, including hit and run causing death, dangerous driving causing death and possession of stolen property.
Two passengers in the truck fled the scene but were quickly arrested.
In May, Janelle Umpherville, 26, pleaded guilty to a number of charges connected to Morley's death — including theft and being in a stolen vehicle.
The other passenger, the underage son of a Calgary police officer, pleaded guilty in June to being a passenger in the back seat during a drive in a stolen vehicle — more commonly known as joyriding.
He was sentenced to one year probation.
The boy cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, as he was 17 years old at the time of the crash.
Police believe the truck had been stolen in Chestermere. The incident began when a Tsuut'ina police officer tried to stop the truck.
Grouette was set to appear in court in Calgary on Thursday.
