Woman taken hostage at Lethbridge non-profit

A woman in Lethbridge, Alta., was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after being taken hostage at a non-profit organization in the community, the city’s police say.

A woman was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries Thursday after being held hostage at a non-profit organization in Lethbridge, Alta., according to police. 

Police say the 54-year-old woman is now in serious but stable condition.

Earlier in the day, Lethbridge police said a woman who was employed at Lethbridge Legal Guidance was taken hostage inside the building around 1:30 p.m. The critical incident team entered the building around 3 p.m. 

Lethbridge Legal Guidance, located in the 400 block of Fifth Street S., provides free legal assistance, information and advocacy to individuals experiencing financial difficulties.

Police said they took a 40-year-old woman into custody.

Earlier in the afternoon, the public had been advised to stay away from the "high-risk" area. Police are no longer on scene, but the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending, police say.
