Denny Morrison on his Calgary motorcycle crash

In his first in-person interview since his motorcycle accident earlier this month, Olympic speedskater Denny Morrison tells his side of the story to the Calgary Eyeopener.

'It wasn't like I was out joyriding down Crowchild,' says Olympic speedskater

Denny Morrison says he was just "going with the flow of traffic" when his motorcycle collided into the side of a Toyota Corolla earlier this month, flipping the car on its side.

"That's what I've been told and that's what the investigation concluded," Morrison told the Calgary Eyeopener Tuesday morning in his first in-person interview since the crash.

"It happened within a kilometer of my house, it wasn't like I was out joy-riding down Crowchild," he said.

After investigation, Calgary police slapped Morrison with a $155 traffic fine for entering an intersection during a yellow light.

"On a motorcycle you can't actually stop that fast. People think they brake pretty quick, but you don't have much rubber on the ground," said Morrison, who has now broken both his legs — his left fibula in 2012 while skiing and his right femur in the crash.

But Morrison isn't worried about this new injury.

"I have over two years until the next Olympics and last time I broke my leg, I had 13 months and made it to those ones and had the best Olympics of my career — so far."

Morrison had a titanium rod placed in his femur and is already hobbling around on it and already using an exercise bike.

"With very, very little resistance. Just spinning the muscle to get the hip to loosen up and move the recovery along."
