On July 20, 2024, Prairie Winds Park in Calgary was alive with vibrant colours, sounds, and flavours as the Nepalese community came together and hosted the second annual Nepali Mela (festival) and Multicultural Showcasing (NMMS) Event. From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., attendees were treated to cultural performances, delicious food, and engaging activities that celebrated both Nepalese heritage and Calgary's diverse multicultural landscape.

The event, themed "Our Culture, Our Identity, and Our Pride: Let's Embrace Together," drew a large crowd, eager to experience the cultural exchange and community spirit that defines Calgary. The day kicked off with a spectacular parade featuring different Nepalese organizations and clubs in the city.

One of the standout attractions was the Mini Nepal exhibit, where visitors marveled at intricate handicrafts, vibrant paintings, and traditional artifacts from Nepal and other cultures. This exhibition provided a fascinating glimpse into the artistic expressions and traditions of different communities, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity.

The food bazaar was a sensory delight, offering attendees a chance to savour authentic Nepali cuisine. The aroma of momos, a popular Nepali dumpling, filled the air, along with other mouth-watering dishes that showcased the rich gastronomic traditions of the region. The food stall was a hub of activity as people lined up to taste the flavours of Nepal, sharing meals and stories with friends old and new.

CBC Calgary was present at the event and hosted an interactive activity inviting participants to take a blank jigsaw puzzle piece and write something cool about Nepal or their own culture. This creative exercise encouraged reflection on cultural heritage and personal identity. Participants eagerly joined in, sharing insights and experiences that added depth to the multicultural theme of the day.

As the sun set over Prairie Winds Park, the Nepali Mela and Multicultural Showcasing Event concluded on a high note, leaving attendees with a renewed sense of community and a deeper appreciation for the mosaic of cultures that makes Calgary unique. The event was not just a celebration of Nepalese culture but a testament to the power of cultural exchange in promoting understanding and unity among diverse communities.
