Woman killed as string of 4 separate collisions force several road closures in Calgary, Airdrie

A string of four serious collisions in Calgary and Airdrie resulted in one fatality and prompted emergency crews to temporarily close several routes late Wednesday afternoon.

A string of four serious collisions in Calgary and Airdrie resulted in one fatality and prompted emergency crews to temporarily close several routes late Wednesday afternoon.

Paramedics responded just after 3 p.m. to a collision between a sedan and a sport utility vehicle at Highway 566 and Range Road 13 near Balzac, just south of Airdrie.

A woman in her 20s or 30s was pronounced dead at the scene after being pulled from the sedan.

Another woman in the sedan, also in her 20s or 30s, was transported to Foothills hospital in Calgary with internal and external injuries which are potentially life threatening.

STARS air ambulance transported a man from the scene in his 60s or 70s to Foothills hospital from the SUV. He also received internal and external injuries considered potentially life-threatening.

A separate collision closed the eastbound lane of Yankee Valley Boulevard at Highway 2 in Airdrie.

A multi-vehicle collision on Deerfoot Trail near Peigan Trail in Calgary also sent two women to hospital and snarled traffic early Wednesday afternoon.

A fourth collision — on Highway 2 near CrossIron Mills north of Calgary at about 4:30 p.m. — involved a motorcycle and a car. The motorcyclist, a man in his 50s, was transported to Foothills hospital in stable, non-life-threatening condition.
