A 16-year-old is facing two charges in connection with a brutal assault in New Westminster on Tuesday evening.

The 19-year-old male victim, who was found by a passerby near 23rd Street and 8th Avenue, remains in a coma and is not expected to survive the attack. Homicide investigators have already been assigned to the case.

Police say the youth was arrested shortly after the attack and is expected to appear in court this morning to face charges of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.

Investigators says it appears that the two did not know each other.

“The apparent motive for this tragic incident was an attempted robbery," said Sgt. Bari Emam of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

The names of the victim and the suspect have not been released.
