An 18-year-old man is recovering in hospital after being shot in the leg in Burnaby, B.C., on Sunday night, police say.

RCMP said the victim was one of three men travelling in a car that was targeted in the shooting, which happened on Willingdon Avenue near Burke Street. All three are known to police.

Officers responded to the scene after reports of gunfire around 10:30 p.m., PT, according to a statement issued Monday.

Police say it appears as though the three men were travelling in a grey 2011 Suzuki Swift when a white sedan pulled up beside their vehicle and started shooting.

The driver of the Suzuki Swift crashed the vehicle and all three men tried to flee, police say, but the 18-year-old who had been shot was found at the scene alongside the vehicle.

Cpl. Brett Cunningham said the victim was taken to hospital and his injuries are non-life threatening.

The two other men were found a short time later. Neither had been injured.

Police say it's not clear how many people were in the suspect vehicle, which officers have not been able to locate.

Forensic investigators were at the scene overnight gathering evidence. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call Burnaby RCMP.
