A production assistant said the crew was filming in the atrium of the downtown branch when the sprinklers turned on around 5:30 a.m. PT, flooding most of the area.

The books in the main section of the library were protected from the spray and firefighters and film set members joined in to help to clear the water.

Library spokesman Stephen Barrington said it's unclear why the sprinklers went off, but staff members are looking into what happened.

In the meantime the atrium was cleaned up just in time for the regularly scheduled opening at 10 a.m., he said.

Meanwhile a book sale that was scheduled to continue today on the lower exhibition level of the atrium has been cancelled while the water gets mopped up.

Barrington said fortunately those books were covered with tarp before the incident and were not damaged.

Organizers are hoping the sale will resume Saturday.
