Terrace RCMP are searching for a suspect after a 50-year-old man was severely injured Wednesday night near the banks of the Skeena River.

Police say the man suffered a severe neck injury.

The man was bleeding profusely, but managed to climb a grassy trail from the riverbank to a nearby bridge.

A passing motorist stopped to help and call emergency responders.

Paramedics rushed the man to local hospital, but he lost consciousness before he could speak with investigators.

The man was airlifted to Vancouver hospital because of the severity of his injuries.

"We're still piecing together what happened," said Terrace RCMP Const. Angela Rabut.

"We're looking for witnesses to come forward to help identify a suspect," she said.

RCMP and forensic identification officers closed off the area around the bridge as they searched for clues.
