A pedestrian was taken to hospital after being struck by a car on Vancouver's Granville Street, late Tuesday night.

It happened in the 1000-block of Granville Street just before midnight.

The B.C. Ambulance Service said the patient was taken to Vancouver General Hospital in serious condition.

Witnesses said a grey car was travelling southbound on Granville Street when a young woman attempted to cross the street.

Egzon Berisha said his back was turned when he heard the noise from the crash. He turned around and saw the woman lying on the street.

"She was out for a little bit, and then she was breathing fine and everything, so then the ambulance came and everything," said Berisha. "She was injured on her head. She was bleeding from her head."

Witnesses said the driver immediately pulled over.

Vancouver Police weren't saying much immediately after the incident, except that it was serious and the driver was cooperating.

About an hour and a half after the collision, a tow truck took the car away with a smashed windshield and a police escort.
