New Westminster pensioners group wants more access to reflective safety gear
Sapperton seniors holding event promoting safety gear Tuesday
A group of seniors in New Westminster wants more pedestrians to wear reflective safety gear, and is holding a public event Tuesday with police and fire officials to promote the practice.
Vic Leach of the Sapperton Old Age Pensioners Association said he knows many people who have had near misses with vehicles.
"We had another individual that was killed that was just down the street from us. She was 52 years of age and they still haven't found the driver," said Leach.
That collision happened Dec. 10, 2014, just before 9 p.m. PT. The driver didn't stop.
The woman was one of at least seven pedestrians killed in B.C. in a two week period, despite a special public safety bulletin from the B.C. Coroners Service.
Leach said it's difficult to find proper reflective gear to wear as a pedestrian, and wants businesses and municipalities to stock the products.
"Make sure you try to find those things that are reflective and ask at your pharmacy stores," said Leach.
The public event "Reflection for Safety" is Tuesday Feb. 10 at the Sapperton Pensioner's Hall.
