A man has been charged in connection with a home invasion in Vancouver last week, in which an alleged robber was shot dead.

The eight charges laid against Travis Arthur Chartrand, 19, of Surrey include robbery, breaking and entering, aggravated assault, using a firearm and possessing a dangerous weapon, Vancouver police said Tuesday.

Chartrand will remain in custody until a Feb. 26 court appearance.

Shortly before 2 p.m. last Tuesday in the 6900 block of Fraser Street, two men arrived at a home and quickly engaged in an altercation with two occupants, police said previously.

At some point, shots were fired. One of the occupants of the home was shot in the chest. He was treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

One of two alleged robbers fled the scene and another was shot dead, police said. The dead man was identified by police as Shane Allan Messent, 24, of Surrey.

An uninjured occupant of the home was taken into police custody following the death of Messent but has since been released without being charged.

Vancouver police said their investigation continues.
