Fraser Street homicide was botched home invasion: police

Vancouver police have released the name of the man who was killed Tuesday afternoon in the B.C. Lower Mainland's latest homicide.

Police said Shane Allan Messent, 24, of Surrey was killed while taking part in what they are calling a targeted home invasion at a home on the 6900 block of Fraser Street.

Police said they had contact with Messent before the shooting, but they would not say whether they believed he had any gang affiliations.

A man was arrested overnight Tuesday in Surrey in connection with the investigation, but no charges have been laid in the case, police said.

Brothers fought off gunmen: woman

So far, police have released few details about the incident, but a woman who said she lived at the house said two armed men arrived and began asking for someone who did not live there.

The woman, Nazreen Dean, said the two men then burst through the doors and began shooting, and her brother Aleem Mohammed, 19, was shot in the chest during the attack. 

Her other brother Amir Mohammed, 18, then chased down and tackled Messent on the street, she said. That fight ended with Messent dead and her brother being taken into custody by police, Dean said.

Dean said she did not witness the attack herself, but was told about it by her brother, who called her from police custody. She believed the invasion was a case of mistaken identity and the attackers were searching for someone who did not live at the home.

Police have yet to confirm any of those details, but did say they took one man into custody yesterday and continue to interview witnesses.

Aleem Mohammed remains in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said, but they did not say if Amir Mohammed was being held in custody.
