Former NHL player Stephen Peat charged in Langley arson
Peat played in the NHL off and on from 2001 to 2006 for the Washington Capitals
Former Washington Capitals player Stephen Peat, 35, has been charged with arson following a fire at the home he shares with his father in Langley, B.C., last week.
Peat turned himself in to Langley RCMP on Thursday after he was charged with arson with disregard for human life and arson causing property damage.
RCMP say the fire broke out at a home on the 4400 block of 208A street on March 17 just before 11 p.m. PT.
At the time Cpl. Holly Marks said police had determined there was a dispute at the home between a father and a son earlier in the day.
Later that evening after the father had gone to bed, a passerby spotted someone attempting to start a fire outside the home.
"A passer-by witnessed the arsonist as he was lighting the fire and made attempts to thwart his efforts, however the house fire was reported a short time later," said a statement released by RCMP last week.
Peat appeared in court to face the charges on Monday.
The right winger played in five hockey leagues over his career, including three stints with the NHL's Washington Capitals between 2001 and 2006.
In 130 NHL games Peat earned a reputation as a fighter with 234 penalty minutes, and just 10 points.
