Costco's Listeria recall expands to include Organic by Nature frozen sweet peas

Costco's recall of frozen vegetables due to Listeria concerns now includes the Organic by Nature brand organic sweet peas.

Costco is expanding its recall of frozen vegetables issued yesterday in Western Canada, to include Organic by Nature brand frozen organic sweet peas, due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

Consumers should not consume the product, which was sold by Costco warehouses in B.C., Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they are purchased.

The affected products are:

  • Organic by Nature Organic Sweet Peas (frozen): Size 2.5 kg. Best by dates: From April 26, 2016 to April 26, 2018 inclusive. UPC: 8 46358 00061 9

On Tuesday, Costco recalled frozen butternut squash and vegetable medley products from the same brand.

On April 23, the recall included Organic by Nature frozen peas, corn and other vegetables.

Recall triggered in U.S.

There have been no reported illnesses in Canada associated with the consumption of the food, the CFIA said.

However, there have been reported illnesses in the United States linked to foods from the same manufacturer, CRF Frozen Foods, according to the CFIA.

Food contaminated with the bacteria Listeria may not look or smelled spoiled, but can still make you sick, with symptoms including vomiting, nausea, fever, muscle aches and severe headache.

Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk, the CFIA states. In pregnant women, Listeria can lead to miscarriage and stillbirth.
