CBC Musical Nooners July 21: Haya
Music combines the rich heritage of Mongolia with modern sounds
Haya will be bringing their eclectic combination of traditional Mongolian and modern sounds to the CBC Musical Nooners stage this Tuesday.
Haya — which means "margin" or "boundary" — is made up of six members from Mongolia, the Philippines and Switzerland.
They capture the spirit of ethnic Mongolian music through throat singing (khoomei) and instruments such as the horse-head fiddle (morin khuur), the long-necked lute (tanbur) and the shaman drum, and round out their sound with modern acoustic and bass guitars.
Since their first album Wolf Totem, they added vocalist Daiqing Tana, whose soaring vocals have been a feature of their subsequent albums.

The CBC Musical Nooners are a series of free, live music concerts from noon to 1 p.m. at the CBC Vancouver Plaza on Hamilton Street (between West Georgia and Robson).
