An 18-year-old is now facing a second degree murder charge in the death of a Surrey teenager nearly a year and a half ago, according to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

Jaylen Sandhu was stabbed during a fight on Dec. 18, 2014 in the 16300 block of 88 Avenue. Although he was able to flee his attacker, the 17-year-old later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

The suspect, who was also 17 at the time of the incident, was arrested in another province. He is scheduled to appear in Surrey provincial court Monday afternoon, and cannot be named because of his age at the time of the murder.

Police say Sandhu and the suspect were known to each other.

Sgt. Stephanie Ashton said Monday the suspect was identified early in the investigation, but members of IHIT took time to build the case against him through witness statements and forensic evidence.
