Jaylen Sandhu, 17, identified as victim of fatal assault in Surrey

Homicide investigators have identified 17-year-old Jaylen Sandhu as the victim of an assault in Surrey, B.C., on Thursday. 

Surrey RCMP responded to an assault in progress in the 16300 block of 88 Avenue at 2 p.m. PT on Dec. 18.

According to the Integrated Homicide Investigation team (IHIT), who are now leading the investigation, Sandhu was able to get away from his attacker and seek help from a nearby residence.

He was then taken to a hospital, but succumbed to his injuries soon after. The suspect fled the scene and police say no arrests have yet been made.

"What we believe is that the individuals, that is the victim and suspect, were known to each other," said Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound.

"I can't get into a lot of the specifics on the details because we are still in the early stages.

"It looks like a possible stabbing, but without having a confirmation through an autopsy, we aren't in a position to confirm that."

This is the second death of a teenager in Surrey in the past seven days. This past weekend, 15-year-old Dario Bartoli died in what police call an "alcohol-fuelled confrontation between two groups."

Pound added it was early in the investigation, but it does not appear these two homicides were linked.
