Happy holidays! CBC Books asked authors to share their favourite Canadian books of 2017. We will be publishing these recommendations throughout December.

David Demchuk chose The Marrow Thieves  by Cherie Dimaline.

"This was probably the year when I bought the most books and read the least — but even if I'd read a hundred, Cherie Dimaline's extraordinary novel The Marrow Thieves would still top my list. If you think that this book is not for you because of target audience or genre, think again: Truly, it's a must-read for Canadians of every age and interest. I can't wait for whatever she comes up with next."

David Demchuk (who works at CBC as a communications officer) made the Scotiabank Giller Prize longlist in 2017 for his debut novel The Bone Mother, a collection of horror fairy tales from a group of Eastern European mythical creatures who are sharing their stories before possibly being destroyed by war.
