Happy holidays! CBC Books asked authors to share their favourite books of 2017. We will be publishing these recommendations throughout December.

Andrée Michaud chose Le poids de la neige by Christian Guay-Poliquin, a novel which won the Governor General's Award for French-language fiction in 2017.

"The plot brings together a wounded young man and an old man in a cabin in the woods, during the winter, while people of the nearest village are trying to flee an unnamed and impending danger. Poliquin manage to create in this novel a mysterious and troubling atmosphere, in a simple but poetic language which casts a spell on the reader who wants to know what will happen to the young healing man when everybody will have deserted the area.

"Le poids de la neige have already won a lot of prizes, among which the 2017 Governor General's Literary Award for a French novel, the Prix des collégiens du Québec and the prix Ringuet de l'Académie des lettres du Québec. I highly recommend it."

Quebec author Andrée Michaud made the 2017 Scotiabank Giller Prize longlist for her novel Boundary. She is a two-time winner of the Governor General's Award for French-language fiction, for Le ravissement (2001) and for Bondrée (2014).
