Son of a Critch is a coming-of-age story about Mark Critch, a young teenage boy navigating love, school and family during the '80s and '90s in Newfoundland. Very much an old soul, Mark uses comedy and self-deprecation to win friends and find his place in the world.
What happened in Season 3 of Son of a Critch?
In Season 3 of Son of a Critch, Mark entered Grade 9, enjoying his final year at the top of the school social ladder.
He grappled with needing glasses, awkward crushes, near-death experiences and family tensions. Throughout, Mark learned that staying true to himself is harder — and more rewarding — than he ever imagined and that growth often comes from embracing life's imperfections.
What's new for Season 4 of Son of a Critch?
It's the dawn of a new decade and time to start high school, where Mark finds himself on the bottom rung in Grade 10. Change is never easy, but it can be rewarding.
Mark meets a teacher who ignites his love for acting, leading him to start a sketch comedy troupe, Cat Fud. His mom Mary, facing menopause and a mid-life crisis, goes back to school for a fresh start. Brother Mike Jr. embarks on a radio career, joining Magic 97, a new FM radio station, and finds himself competing with his father, Mike Sr. who struggles to feel relevant when a new owner buys VOCM.
Pop (finally) moves into his own bedroom and deals with a serious illness. Ritche chases his musical dreams and forms his first band, PotatoBug. Fox starts a new job, makes new friends and faces struggles in her burgeoning romance with Mark.
Is Son of a Critch based on a true story?
Son of a Critch is based on an award-winning, best-selling memoir by Canadian comedian Mark Critch (from This Hour Has 22 Minutes). The series shares hilarious moments inspired by his actual life growing up in St. John's, Newfoundland during the '80s and '90s. In the show, Mark plays his late father, Mike Critch, a popular local radio host.
This season, the school scenes are shot in the actual high school, Holy Heart of Mary, that Mark attended in St. John's decades ago.
"The sweetest part of making the show has been getting to relive parts of my youth," says Mark Critch, "I hope you'll come along with us as we experience some growing pains and a whole lot of laughter."
Who stars in Son of a Critch?
Season 4 returns with Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (young Mark), Malcolm McDowell (Pop), Claire Rankin (Mary, Mark's mother), Sophia Powers (friend and love interest Fox), Colton Gobbo (Mike Jr., Mark's older brother) and Mark Rivera (best friend Ritche).
Actor Shawn Doyle (The Expanse, Big Love) joins the cast as Mark's mentor and drama high school teacher and comedian Rick Mercer plays radio station VOCM's new owner.
