'It's a good feeling': Eugene Levy on Schitt's Creek's four Emmy nominations

Yesterday, the nominees for this year's Emmys were announced and one Canadian show finally got some well-earned recognition. After five seasons, CBC's Schitt's Creek received its first-ever Emmy nominations — four in total including: best comedy series, outstanding contemporary costumes, best lead actress for Catherine O'Hara and best lead actor for Eugene Levy.

"We had our moments during the last few weeks of shooting. Every set we wrapped, it was a tearful thing," Levy said over the phone shortly after getting the big news. "The great thing about the show is that the show is hitting a peak now instead of after our first season. It's been a slow build. We've always called it the little engine that could."

Levy says the show, which he co-created with his son and co-star Dan Levy, always did well in Canada when it debuted on CBC in 2015, but it wasn't until Netflix picked it up in 2017 that he really noticed how many people were watching all over. 

"In year five, we get Emmy nominations, which we were kinda hoping we might get one day, but there had to be an awareness to the show [first]," he says. "And we still have one more season to go. … We're going out right where we want to be."
