It was an announcement that few expected, but that many are supporting. Shawn Atleo announced today that he is resigning as National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN), a title he's held since 2009. Morley Googoo, AFN Regional Chief for Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, worked closely with Atleo and he tells Carol that his resignation was a "shock."

"It is an opportunity to get people to start talking and to start listening to each other, and to try to figure out where we go from here," Chief Googoo tells Carol.

Chief Atleo's support of the federal government's First Nations education act has been a divisive and controversial issue for some First Nations leaders, since it was introduced in February.
