Saskatoon sandwich influencer says TikTok bans mean loss of community
The popular social media app TikTok was briefly banned in the United States on Jan. 19. The ban lasted fewer than 24 hours, as U.S. President Donald Trump — who supported a TikTok ban in 2020 — signed an executive order directing the Department of Justice not to enforce the ban for 75 days. The U.S. government sees TikTok's Chinese ownership as a "grave threat to national security" because of the fear that China could use TikTok's powerful algorithm to spread disinformation. Saskatoon's Jon Ostrander, also known as the Sandwich Dad on TikTok, says around 60 per cent of his followers on the app are in the U.S. He shares how a TikTok ban could affect him and his community of sandwich-loving friends.
