One person has died in a west-end apartment fire Monday, Windsor police say. It was the third apartment fire in the city in 24 hours.

Windsor police said Monday afternoon the service's arson unit is investigating the blaze, which broke out around 7 a.m. in the 300 block of Sandwich Street.

A 71-year-old woman located in the ground floor apartment was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The blaze has been extinguished but the cause remains under investigation, police said.

It was the third apartment fire in 24 hours for Windsor Fire and Rescue Services. Firefighters responded to two high-rise apartment building fires on the same street near the downtown Sunday morning.

The apartment building fires happened within roughly 90 minutes of one another, and close together.

The first broke out around 10 a.m. Sunday at 810 Ouellette Avenue on the building's 11th floor. Officials say it caused around $75,000 in damage.

Careless smoking gets the blame, according to Windsor Fire and Rescue Services.

The next one, at 920 Ouellette Avenue, was reported around 11:30 a.m. It was contained to the 16th floor, according to fire officials.

The lone occupant of the unit remains in hospital with "serious" injuries while the origin and cause of the blaze remains unsolved as of now. The Ontario Fire Marshal is now investigating.
