Toronto was blanketed with a light dusting of snow Friday morning, with Environment Canada forecasting frigid temperatures for the weekend.

The federal weather agency had issued a winter weather travel advisory for the city and surrounding areas on Thursday afternoon, though it was lifted in the early morning hours Friday.

Flurries are expected throughout the day before the snow tapers off this evening, Environment Canada said.

Roughly two centimetres of snow were expected to accumulate in some parts of Toronto, especially closer to Lake Ontario.

It will feel like -16 overnight into Saturday. Environment Canada cautions that from Saturday night to Monday morning, temperatures will remain cold enough that there is a risk of frostbite or hypothermia if you're outside for long enough without adequate protection.

Daytime highs will return to the freezing mark or slightly above zero early next week through to Christmas Day, the federal weather agency says.
