Man in his 60s dies after overnight fire at Toronto apartment
Fire happened overnight near Davenport Road and Symington Avenue, police say
A man in his 60s has died after a fire overnight at a nine-storey Toronto apartment on Saturday, police say.
Officers and Toronto Fire were called to the building near Davenport Road and Symington Avenue around 12:40 a.m., Toronto police said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
Several fire trucks were on scene, police said. The fire has since been extinguished.
Toronto Fire Platoon Chief Rodney Johnston said the fire happened on the seventh floor of the high rise building.
When crews got into the apartment unit, they encountered heavy smoke and discovered the victim, Johnston said, speaking at the scene.
He was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, where he later died.
Residents were outside the building early Saturday after being evacuated.
"We're clearing floor-by-floor… making sure that the building is safe for everybody," Johnston said.
The Ontario Fire Marshall is investigating, along with Toronto Fire and police, Toronto Fire said.
