One person in critical condition after fire at Etobicoke home
Firefighters could see flames, smokes from several kilometres away, fire chief says
One person was taken to hospital with critical injuries after being rescued from a house fire in Etobicoke on Sunday.
Police and firefighters were called about the fire at a house on Upper Humber Road around 12:30 p.m., said Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop.
Jessop said they received multiple reports of children trapped inside the residence. Police officers were the first to arrive at the scene of the fire and went inside to search for them, but no children were found, Jessop said.
The fire was so severe that firefighters saw flames coming out of the residence from several kilometres away as they approached the scene, Jessop said.
Firefighters rescued one person during a search of the home, who had no vital signs when they were found but was revived by paramedics. They were taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, Jessop said.
No one else was found inside the home. Jessop said the officers who initially went inside before firefighters arrived were treated at the hospital for minor injuries and smoke inhalation.
The fire was brought under control within about half an hour but crews are still on scene to make sure there are no hot spots that could reignite, the fire chief said.
