A Queens County woman is dead after a head-on collision Sunday in central Prince Edward Island, police say.

Queens District RCMP said in a news release that the crash happened at around 5 p.m. on Route 9, the Colville Road, in Hampshire and involved an SUV and a pickup truck.

"This initially appears to show that an SUV crossed the centre line and struck a pickup truck," said Cpl. Gavin Moore.

He said this is a "key contributing factor" and other factors are being examined.

The 47-year-old driver of the SUV was pronounced dead while being transported to hospital.

A youth and woman from the pickup truck had serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Route 9 was closed for several hours after the collision.

An RCMP collision analyst was called to the scene, and the investigation continues.

  • P.E.I. RCMP initially stated the 47-year-old who died in the cash was from Prince County. In fact, she was from Queens County.
