Charlottetown imposes 48-hour parking ban to clear snow

A 48-hour parking restriction was imposed Wednesday by the City of Charlottetown and city police.

Vehicles parked on roads may be ticketed, towed

A 48-hour parking restriction was imposed Wednesday by the City of Charlottetown and city police.

Although the restriction, effective immediately, is for all streets, the focus will be on narrower areas such as Kirkwood Drive to Water Street and Edward Street to West Street.

"This parking restriction is necessary to remove the snow that has accumulated. We need vehicles that are slowing cleanup efforts and impeding traffic to be moved," said Charlottetown Police Chief Paul Smith in a news release.

"Any vehicles parked on the side of the road risk being ticketed and towed. Any vehicles parked in the roadways impeding or obstructing traffic will be ticketed and towed. We will make efforts to locate vehicle owners to give them a chance to move their vehicles before we have them towed, but if we can’t locate the owners we will have to tow."

Motorists are encouraged to take transit, carpool or park in the Fitzroy, Queen and Pownal parkades.

Sidewalk clearing will also be limited because there is limited space to move the snow.

The city asks motorists to drive carefully and slowly and watch for pedestrians, particularly in school zones.

A section of Queen Street from Reserve to Pond Street is also temporarily closed to clean up after a water main break yesterday.
