Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say three people were killed and another seriously injured in a fiery head-on crash on County Road 2 in South Glengarry Thursday night.

Police said in a news release it happened just after 9 p.m. on County Road 2 near McGibbon Road, east of Cornwall.

Investigators have determined so far that a car's driver going east crossed the centre line. At least two westbound drivers swerved out of the way, but there was eventually a head-on crash that caused one of the vehicles to catch fire.

The three people killed were pronounced dead at the scene, OPP said: a 16-year-old girl from Champlain Township, a 65-year-old woman from Cornwall and a 44-year-old man from Ottawa.

A 16-year-old boy from Cornwall was airlifted to a hospital, police said.

The driver of the car that crossed the centre line was killed, police said, as were the driver and a passenger in the other vehicle. The injured boy was in the westbound vehicle.

Police did not say which of the victims was going east and none of their names were shared.

The scene is about 10 kilometres east of downtown Cornwall and 95 kilometres southeast of downtown Ottawa. County Road 2 reopened overnight.
