Why Whitehorse
"Why in the world would you come to Whitehorse?" Common enough question I'm asked, because my Aussie accent emotes feelings of warmth by beautiful beaches and hot summer days. Why Whitehorse? I had lived in 11 different countries before arriving in Canada and visited 55. Why Whitehorse? The moment I drove my little Dodge Grand Caravan on the search for wealth, I saw the City of Whitehorse sign. I made it — it took me weeks and three flat tires to make it from B.C. Then I continued to drive past the sign and there was forest. Endless forest. Oh my goodness, what have I done? Where have I come to? I'm literally in the middle of nowhere! Then I drive downtown and see buildings and a Starbucks — relief. I hadn't driven all this way for a job to the middle of nowhere for it to actually be the middle of nowhere. But instead what I found was spectacular trails, welcoming people and diverse cultures. I was shocked and overwhelmed by this feeling of being connected to this city. It felt like home. The minus 40, the long dark winter days are simply the tax you pay to live in this incredible city. Slowly, one year led to eight, and now I have a home, husband and little Yukoner to celebrate living in in the city I call home — Whitehorse.
