Wildfire near Whitbourne under control

Provincial forest fire duty officer Jeff Motty told CBC News a fire is burning near Ocean Pond, about 18 kilometres east of Whitbourne. The fire was first reported just after 2 p.m. NT.

A wildfire burning near Whitbourne is now under control, according to the province's active wildfire dashboard.

Fire crews responded to the fire burning near Ocean Pond Friday afternoon. Jamie Budden, chief of the Whitbourne Fire Department, told CBC News Friday evening that the fire was five kilometres east of the community. No structures were damaged, he said.

The fire was first reported just after 2 p.m. NT. Crews were using one pump station to push back the blaze.

The province's active wildfire dashboard shows the fire was 2.2 hectares in size.

Provincial forest fire duty officer Jeff Motty said it was deemed under control at around 5 p.m.

Motty said the fire was burning adjacent to a Newfoundland Power transmission line.

Motty said the company was notified. CBC News asked Newfoundland Power for more information.
