Dr. Pat Parfrey, a medical practitioner for more than four decades and co-chair of Newfoundland and Labrador's health accord, has been chosen to lead Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services.

Parfrey is a clinical epidemiologist and kidney specialist, and is also known for his research efforts in kidney disease and genetic disease. He most recently served as the deputy minister of health transformation with the provincial government.

He, along with Sister Elizabeth Davis, is steering the implementation of the province's Health Accord, a 10-year-plan to revamp Newfoundland and Labrador's health-care system. The blueprint document released in 2022.

Parfrey replaces Karen Stone immediately, who had been in the role on an interim basis following the departure of David Diamond.

In a news release issued Thursday, Health Minister John Hogan said Parfrey's appointment will accelerate the process of putting Health Accord N.L.'s recommendations into action.

Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services is the sole health authority in the province as of April 2023, due in part to Parfrey's work on the health accord — which recommended the four former regional health authorities merge to save money and improve services.
