A cheque worth thousands of dollars raised from selling Mary Brown's Big Mary sandwiches at one location in the St. John's metro area was presented to a teenage cancer patient Sunday.
Makayla Puddicombe and her family were presented with a cheque for $17,121.90, after they returned home a day earlier from Toronto, where the 15-year-old was undergoing treatment.
Last Wednesday, the Paradise location of the chicken restaurant held a fundraiser for Puddicombe, who has been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive brain tumour.
Over 1,600 Big Marys were sold. All proceeds went to the teen and her family, who has the financial burden of travelling to and from SickKids — Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children — for treatment.
