Sackville men accused of second-degree murder to return to court next week
Tyler Murphy and Dylan Murphy are in custody following a fatal stabbing
Two men accused of second-degree murder following a fatal stabbing in Sackville will return to Moncton provincial court next week.
Tyler Murphy, 22, and Dylan Murphy, 20, both appeared in Moncton court this morning. They were escorted into the courtroom separately and appeared separately before Judge Anne Richard.
According to the court docket, each was supposed to have an election hearing today to choose what kind of trial they want, but court was adjourned until March 27 at 9:30 a.m. The Crown objected to the release of both men until then.
Sackville RCMP responded Saturday night to a report of a stabbing outside a business on Lorne Street. When they arrived at about 7:45 p.m., they found a man lying on the side of the road suffering from stab wounds.
They later identified the man as 44-year-old Shawn Mitton, who was transported to hospital where he died of his injuries.
Tyler Murphy and Dylan Murphy were arrested the same evening and charged with second-degree murder over the weekend. The investigation is ongoing.
On Tuesday, Tyler Murphy was brought into the prisoner's box first. He had shaggy, brown hair and didn't speak.
Dylan Murphy had short, blond hair and was brought into the prisoner's box after Tyler. After being read the charges against him, he said he understood them. He will begin his application for legal aid today.
