Firebombing suspect arrested

A suspect has been arrested in a recent Molotov cocktail attack on a cafe in east-end Montreal.

Mickendy Demosthène, 18, turned himself in on Tuesday. He was charged with arson and breaking and entering Wednesday at the Montreal courthouse.

Demosthène was identified as a suspect in the firebombing of Café Ferrari on Nov. 24 using eyewitness accounts and surveillance tape, police said. His mug shot was released to the media a few days later.

The firebombing was one of a string of 13 firebombings of cafes and restaurants in east-end Montreal dating back to mid-November.

Police said they are still seeking a second suspect in the Café Ferrari incident,  a black man in his early 20s of medium height and build, with a diamond stud in his right ear.

Police would not say whether Demosthène, or the other man, are suspects in the other attacks.           

"It is possible that they are not the only two suspects who are involved," said Montreal police Const. Olivier Lapointe.

Lapointe said Demosthène is known to officers, but could not say whether he is affiliated with a street gang.

So far, Lapointe said Demosthène has not been forthcoming with information.

"He was under interrogation but it was not enough for us to understand the motive," Lapointe said.
