A senior who did not return home after she took a walk on a western Manitoba lake on Monday is believed to have drowned, RCMP say.

Mounties were notified that a 70-year-old woman might have fallen through ice on Lake Winnipegosis about 1 p.m. Thursday, RCMP said in a news release.

The woman was believed to have gone for a routine walk with her two dogs, but did not come back home. One of the woman's relatives went to the lake, finding one of the dogs sitting on the ice.

Searchers found the woman beneath the ice, and she was pronounced dead in hospital.

Searchers also observed open areas of water on the lake, police say.

RCMP say their investigation continues.
