Ontario's police watchdog is investigating a collision west of London on Saturday that left one person in hospital, Ontario Provincial Police say.

The two-vehicle crash happened as the OPP investigated a suspected stolen vehicle, police said, adding that the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was later notified and invoked its mandate.

Paramedics and fire crews responded to the scene along Melbourne Road between Carroll and Jubilee drives, near the western edge of Munsee-Delaware First Nation, around 7:20 a.m., police said.

One person was taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The collision shut down the stretch of Melbourne Road into Saturday evening. It was not immediately clear on Sunday whether the roadway had reopened.

Provincial police referred any inquiries to the SIU, which did not return a request for comment by publication.
