Cold weather grips region as Boler Mountain opens for the season
A chance of flurries today and feeling like -18 degrees Celsius in London on Thursday
There's no major dumping of snow forecast for London, but the wind is making it feel like -18 degrees Celsius on Thursday and parts of Huron County are under a snow squall warning.
There is a chance of flurries today in London and although the sun will peek out from the clouds occasionally, west winds gusting up to 70 km/h will make the -7 degree weather feel much chillier. Tonight's low will be -12 degrees Celsius, Environment Canada says.
Meanwhile Goderich, southern Huron County and Bluewater will get heavy lake-effect snow squalls throughout Thursday and Friday, with up to 20 cm of snow accumulating by Friday, meteorologists say.
The westerly winds will create very poor visibility because of blowing snow.
Boler Mountain opens for season
Skiers and snowboarders will descend on Boler Mountain this afternoon as it opens for the season at 4 p.m.
The recent cold weather has been perfect for making snow to get the slopes ready, said Marty Thody, a member of Boler's management team.
"The slopes look as good as I've seen them this time of year. We've been blessed with some great temperatures for production snow and our equipment is working really well right now and we're able to produce a lot of snow," Thody said.
Six slopes, two chair lifts and the conveyer lift will be open today, with more opening over the coming weeks, he added. The tubing hill will be open by Christmas.
