Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) is searching for a group of young people who they say stole fireworks from a trailer and assaulted staff members in the process.

On Saturday night around 9 p.m., police say they responded to a disturbance report about a group of six to 10 youth in the parking lot of a plaza on Highlight Road W. and Fischer-Hallman Road.

WRPS says in a news release that "several teenage males" entered a trailer that was selling fireworks.

The teenagers threatened and assaulted employees while stealing the merchandise, police say.

The two men working there were 25 and 26 years old and had minor physical injuries.

The teenagers were seen "fleeing" toward Fischer-Hallman Road afterwards, say police.

This incident comes following news that Kitchener and Waterloo are currently cutting back on fireworks sales due to firework-related complaints. Residents in both cities will have to buy their fireworks elsewhere starting next year.

WRPS says the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call police or contact Crime Stoppers.
