The Indian Lakes Golf Course, west of Edmonton, is being closed after the Enoch Cree First Nation learned that live munitions may have been used when the area was used for training in World War II.
The land was used as a practice bombing range from 1942 to 1946. The closure of the golf course and the Enoch Cree Nation Cultural Grounds will put 50 people out of work.
Enoch Chief Ron Morin says the federal government told them that only smoke bombs were used. But an independent survey commissioned by the band suggests otherwise prompting concerns that the area is not safe.
Morin wants the land and water tested, and the government to apologize.
The Department of National Defence said the site was assessed as having a low unexploded-device risk in 2011.
The department admits no such site can ever be declared completely hazard-free and the public should exercise caution whenever venturing into these areas.
