Vancouver Island town mourns councillor killed in Surrey crash
Police believe another driver disregarded a stop sign and slammed into Moralea Milne's vehicle
The Victoria-area community of Metchosin has lowered its flags to half mast after the death of a district councillor in a collision this weekend.
Moralea Milne, 68, was killed on Saturday when her car was struck by another vehicle at an intersection in Surrey, the District of Metchosin has confirmed.
"Today is a very sad day for everyone who knew and worked with Moralea, and our thoughts and prayers are with her family now," Mayor John Ranns said in a statement.
"Moralea made many thoughtful contributions to important policy decisions on Council and her voice will be missed. She cared deeply about Metchosin and the environment and in addition to being an outstanding Councillor, served her community well in many other ways."
Milne had served on council since 2008 and helped forge a stronger relationship between district council and the Beecher Bay Scia'new First Nation, according to the news release.
She had announced her plans to retire from municipal politics after this fall's election.
The crash that killed Milne also sent her 73-year-old male passenger to hospital.
Investigators believe the collision happened because the driver of the other vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign on 40 Avenue at 184 Street.
The 37-year-old driver of the second vehicle was also injured in the crash.
