Caregiver accused of stealing $270,000 from 91-year-old Coquitlam woman
'She felt there was so much trust between her and the caregiver, she didn't want to believe it.'
A caregiver is facing criminal charges after she allegedly stole over a quarter of a million dollars from the bank account of the 91-year-old Coquitlam woman for whom she was working.
Coquitlam RCMP say Antonette Dizon of Burnaby withdrew close to $270,000 over a one year period after stealing the elderly woman's bank card and somehow obtaining the PIN number.
Dizon, 49, has been charged with theft over $5,000. She had worked for the victim and her elderly husband for a year and a half.
"The victim was really caught off guard," said Const. Jaimie Phillipson. "She felt there was so much trust between her and the caregiver she didn't want to believe it."
Phillipson says it appears Dizon was withdrawing money from the victim's account on almost a daily basis.
Police launched an investigation after the victim reported the money missing. They gathered evidence from bank machine surveillance cameras.
Phillipson says many expensive and recent purchases have been seized from Dizon's house, however it will be difficult for the victim to recover all her money.
Dizon has been released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in Port Coquitlam provincial court June 27.
