"As I was interpreting it, I was like, man, this is a really good message," confides Rose Cousins on her decision to cover Corey Hart's "Never Surrender" for her Juno 365 session. "When you're alone and you're kind of lost, it's totally fine, just don't give up, you have the power to keep going."
Cousins is the most recent artist to accept our invitation to cover a single of the year from Junos past. Hart nabbed that award in 1985 for his power ballad "Never Surrender(external link)," the first single from Boy in the Box.
"Once I started to learn it, playing it myself and feeling how relevant the message is today, and also thinking about the fact that I feel very lucky to have grown up empowered, to be my own person and to be strong and independent — I just think it's a great message across the board for anybody who has moments where they're not sure."
How did she make the song her own? "Where his is kind of like, 'We are the Champions,' and it's amazing, I kind of wanted to play it on piano and [give it] a dynamic where ... the poignant parts of the song, lyrically — you could feel them, in an emotional way that maybe you wouldn't have in the Corey Hart version."
