TORONTO, ON—Toronto's major sports teams are all currently playing — with a couple even facing the heat of the playoffs.
They will have to brace themselves to spend a few days without their usual leadership, however, as the coaches of the Raptors, Maple Leafs, and Blue Jays all take off this weekend to fulfill their commitment to perform at Coachella.
"We have absolutely no problem with this," said Toronto Maple Leafs team president Brendan Shanahan. "We knew that Babsy would have to take off for a couple days, and frankly it's only an issue for people because we're still playing, we're still in the series."
"Frankly, when you look at it that way, our coach having to miss a game to play the third stage at one of America's pre-eminent music and arts festivals is a good problem to have."
Though the Blue Jays are struggling, right-fielder José Bautista says that the temporary departure of Gibbons to open for MGMT and Father John Misty alongside his coaching brethren may be just what the team needs.
"I love Gibby. Look, we all love Gibby," said Bautista. "He's great at making us play with a relaxed attitude, the same type he displays when he's jamming out on that bass. But lately we've all been pressing, including him."
"I think Gibby getting a few days away not only to chill out, but to connect with his fans, is going to work wonders for our season.
At press time, John Gibbons wanted us to make it very clear that unlike the two other men, he is technically a manager, not a coach, but is still willing to head to California for some down-home fun.
