Alvin Chiniquay was taken off life support last week following assault while in custody
Calgary police have charged a man with first-degree murder in connection to a fatal assault earlier this month at the Calgary Remand Centre.
Emergency crews were called to the facility on Sept. 9 for reports of an inmate in medical distress.
Police say 40-year-old Alvin Chiniquay was found in life-threatening condition.
He was resuscitated and taken to hospital, but last week he was taken off life support.
Chiniquay's cellmate, 32-year-old Marlon Ledesma, now faces a charge of first-degree murder.
He is next scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 6.
