Police homicide unit anticipates charges against victim's cellmate
A 40-year-old inmate who was assaulted at the Calgary Remand Centre two weeks ago has died after being taken off life support, police said Thursday.
Alvin Clifford Chiniquay was attacked by his cellmate earlier this month, according to police.
On Sept. 9, EMS and fire crews responded to the remand centre for reports that an inmate was in medical distress. Paramedics resuscitated him and transported him to hospital in life-threatening condition.
"It is not yet known what prompted the assault," police said in a release. "An investigation by the CPS Homicide Unit will continue, however, charges are expected to be laid against the man's cellmate."
Police said they would not name the cellmate until charges are filed.
Investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.
