Upper Sackville home invasion suspects escape police by hiding in trunk

Colgrove Avenue armed robbery involved 13-year-old victim

Halifax RCMP say two of the men accused in an armed home invasion in Upper Sackville earlier this month evaded police by hiding in the trunk of a car that had been seized by officers.
The case began on June 8, when two armed men broke into a home on Colgrove Avenue. The gunmen allegedly tied up a 48-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman and a 13-year-old before stealing items from the house.
No one was hurt and the victims managed to free themselves and call police.
The Mounties said it wasn't a random robbery.
Shortly after police were called, they intercepted a vehicle and arrested a 34-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman. The vehicle was seized and towed to a police compound.
Police now say two men were hidden in the trunk of the seized car and they were able to escape the compound.
Cpl. Greg Church explains why the trunk wasn't searched before the car was impounded.

Trunk not searched

"They didn't search the trunk of the vehicle at that time because they wanted to ensure that they preserved any evidence that was related to the robbery at the home," he said.
"They were waiting for a search warrant before they entered the vehicle trunk."
Church says the vehicle was towed and placed in the garage area of the RCMP headquarters for further inspection by the forensic identification services.
One of the hidden men, a 29-year-old from Dartmouth, has been arrested and police are looking for the fourth suspect.
The 29-year-old is also accused in a stabbing in downtown Halifax that injured former inmate Jason Kyle Deyoung, who had just been released from prison the day before he was attacked.
The second man hidden in the trunk is described as white, approximately six feet tall, 165 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes.
The group in the home invasion is facing charges including breaking and entering, robbery, unlawful confinement, uttering death threats and assault with a weapon.
